DIY Tips – Fixtures

Home improvement stores offer a variety of fixtures for the handy homeowner. It is what they have built their business on. You don’t have to be a plumber to install a faucet or a toilet, but certain risks are involved. Here are some tips to consider before you start the job.

Know where your shut-off valves are located: Shut-off valves should be located near the fixture, but also check the site of the main house shut off.

Test the shut-off valves for proper function: Be particularly careful with shut-off valves under your sink or at your toilet. Should they break or fail (a rare occurrence), t can radically change the outcome of a job.

Have a back-up plan should the something go wrong: We recommend that you attempt this job when you can get a plumber to your home – mornings are better than late on a Sunday night.

Most of the time these jobs go easily. However, should you encounter a problem, knowing where and how to shut off the water until someone can help, will likely prevent a minor hiccup from becoming a major disaster.
