Is There A Leak In My Water Service?

For those of you who have wondered -

Why Is My Water Bill So High?

If you are experiencing unusually high water bills and wondered why, you probably need to ask another important question:

Is There A Leak In My Water Service?

To determine if a water service leak is present, first locate and close your home’s main water shut-off. In older homes the shut-off valve is usually located in the basement. In newer homes, it may be located in a garage.

Open a few faucets or a hose spigot. Water should not come out. The flow of water to the house should be stopped at the shut-off valve.

Next locate your home’s water meter. This is usually located at the perimeter of the property near a curb next to the main street. It is inside a concrete box with a cast iron lid. Examine the meter inside for any movement. If the meter is still moving, a water service leak is present.

This method of determining a leak may be confounded by the presence of an irrigation system. A plumber can help. If you cannot find a main shut-off valve or the valve is old and inoperable, a plumber can help with that too.
